UDCL were the first to introduce many of today’s leading courier practices
Overview
Although established as a mainstream courier operator in 1993, the original business of Jaconelli’s Licensed Black Taxis, was actually launched some 30 years earlier in the East End of London by Emilio Jaconelli, father of the current Managing Director Derwent.
In keeping with the family tradition, Derwent’s son James now plays an active role in helping to run the business, and in maintaining the ethos of being a caring employer, with traditional service values.
With his roots firmly embedded in the Licensed London Taxi Trade, Derwent thought it would be a good idea to offer customers a brand new “Vetted” Courier Service by utilising people who were training to become Licensed London Taxi Driver’s (commonly known as The Knowledge of London).
Derwent formed a small team of “Knowledge” Couriers on a split shift “Earn While You Learn” job sharing programme, that became an immediate hit with both customers and couriers, and to this day forms the bedrock of the service.
For almost 25 years UDCL have been looking after the ground transport for some of London’s most prestigious and demanding clients, many of whom are still customers to this day.
UDCL has managed its organic growth carefully, which has enabled it to expand its range of services to include, Cycles, Motorbikes, Small and Large Vans, Luton’s, HGV’s, Licensed London Taxis, Private Hire Cars, Minibuses and Coach Services, as well as UK Next Day and International services.
UDCL also offer Contract Couriers, managed Courier Desks, transport marshals, event outriders, and have a special projects team for bespoke corporate services.
As members of the Despatch Association and founders of the National Same Day Delivery Network, UDCL abides by the DA code of conduct and through the association, enjoy collaborations with many other courier operators throughout the UK, all of whom adhere to the same high standards service advocated by the association.
